In the past year Stone Temple Pilots have toured the world and along the way Jeff Gutt has transformed from a talented new singer to a true frontman. Along the journey Gutts’ vocals remained impressive and solid but his stage presence evolved each show he took the stage.
Last May Stone Temple Pilots visited the Sherman Theater among a run of festival dates as Gutt was being introduced to fans new and old. During the summer Stone Temple Pilots toured heavily with Bush and The Cult as Gutt grew into his role even further. Now, a year later, Gutt has become the frontman Stone Temple Pilots always needed as he is a dominant force on new and old music alike.
Brothers Robert and Dean DeLeo have always been the backbone of Stone Temple Pilots’ dynamic sound and that remains the same for their live performances. Whether new songs, old songs or iconic songs the DeLeo brothers were having a blast on stage at the Sherman Theater as they played to the crowd from the moment they took the stage. Around them Jeff Gutt circled the stage from left to right as he belted out chorus after chorus with both confidence and technical prowess.
Across eighteen songs Stone Temple Pilots took the Sherman Theater crowd on a musical journey that focused as much on the band’s hits as it did their deeper cuts and new music. Gutt’s vocals shined brightly on the band’s newest single “Meadow” but they remained just as remarkable on the updated rendition of “Plush” that the band performed midway through the set.
The crowd remained engaged with the performance all night long as they held their phones high to grab a video clip to show their friends that Stone Temple Pilots were not only back but better than ever. With new music potentially there is no denying that the band will be back through the area soon which will make Stone Temple Pilots fans rejoice. A year has brought them back to the top of their game and in another year they might be playing venues three to four times the size of the Sherman Theater – either way Jeff Gutt, Robert DeLeo, Dean DeLeo, and Eric Kretz will be on stage delivering the best performances of their career.
